Pack A Repair Kit

Whether your next fishing trip is a two thousand miles flight or only two hour drive, Murphy’s Law is still in effect – things can go wrong. So believe me when I say that a few simple repair items can be worth their weight in gold. Here’s what I suggest you carry in your car.

Sooner or later you’ll break a rod tip; so be prepared. Purchase three or four rod tip guides in varying sizes before you leave home. You want ones slightly bigger in diameter than the one presenting riding your rod. Place these guides in a small plastic bag, and store them with your fishing gear. If a break happens, you’ll be ready to done some emergency field repair.

Carry a couple of small screwdrivers too. They are mighty handy for repairing such things as reels or eyeglass frames. I also pack a small needle-nose vise grip. It’s great for straightening bent objects such as rod guides, or securely holding something while you work on it. A tube of silicone chalk or Goop is invaluable for patching waders, wading shoes or even hiking boots. A roll of duct tape patches things too, and in a jam will fix a broken reel seat or even temporarily mend a cracked canoe. I always pack some super glue too. For one thing, it will prolong the life of that one plug or fly that seems to be catching all the fish. Lastly, you may want to have a first aid kit for your fly reel.
